direction.
The hardest thing about a blog is figuring out what to write about. I’m passionate about zero waste living, minimalism, and plant based diets. I want to carve out my corner of the universe to pontificate on conscious consumerism and the geopolitical perils of climate change. I need an accountability partner for turning my dreams into reality. And then there’s food. I. Love. Food. In some alternative universe, I’m a mac and cheese critic.
That’s a lot of possibles niches I could blog in. And I think dcurbanhipster will touch on all of those things. But over the course of the last year I’ve realized there’s a deficit in female voices in the entrepreneur space. I think I’ve decided that’s what dcurbanhipster will be about: the journey of a girl boss entrepreneuring her way through arguably one of America’s most pretentious cities.
When it comes to concepts and ideas, I’ve found a lot of inspiration from women. Cait Flanders, known for Blonde on a Budget and her shopping ban, is one of my favorite bloggers in the personal finance and conscious living spaces. Bea Johnson and Lauren Singer introduced me to the idea of zero waste living. Dana Shultz of Minimalist Baker brought out my passion for experimental plant based cooking.
But when it comes to honing a specific call to action, I’ve noticed men dominate that space. The Minimalists compelled me to start getting rid of unused possessions. For better or for worse, Dave Ramsey infiltrated my thoughts and made me realize I need to get out of debt. And a number of resellers like Chris Lin (@dailyrefinement), Josh McAlary (@vogue_squared), and husband and wife duo Ryan and Alli Roots (@ralliroots) made eBay and Amazon viable entry points into entrepreneurship for me.
Entrepreneurship is a lot of trial and error and learning from others. In my journey to become an entrepreneur I’ve been trying to find a mentor I can look up to. I desperately need one. Specifically, I want to find someone just like me: a young, driven, and independent woman. The majority of YouTubers, bloggers, and Instagram personalities I’ve found in the entrepreneur space are, well, men. Twenty something guys on YouTube have been teaching me about the potential of ecommerce. Those same guys sell courses and access to mastermind groups. Some have even written books about their success. Many are turning their profits into appreciable assets and living their best lives.
But I’m interested in the women. I know we exist, but our numbers are few and our voices are always drowned out. I want to change that. And that is where I think I want to take dcurbanhipster. We need more women entrepreneurs to dream up better lives for themselves, their families, and their communities.
This journey through entrepreneurship won’t be easy. There will be weeks where sleep is next to non-existent. There will be days where I wonder if my car will break down or I’ll get evicted from my apartment. The roller coaster of daily emotions will challenge my perseverance. But this will be a genuine journey of entrepreneurship. My journey.
